WHAT IS STUDENT FINANCE
Plain English. No Jargon. Just Clarity.
Student Finance England (SFE) provides government-backed loans and grants to help cover the cost of higher education. Whether you’re studying a Level 4 Higher National Certificate or a full undergraduate degree, funding is available — and you only start repaying once you’re earning enough.
The process can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Our advisors have helped hundreds of students navigate the system, avoid common mistakes, and secure the maximum funding they’re entitled to.
Tuition Fee Loan - Up to £9,535
Paid directly to your university or college. Covers your full tuition costs for most courses. You never handle this money directly.
Maintenance Loan – Up to £13,022
Paid directly into your bank account each term to help cover living costs — rent, food, travel, and more. Amount depends on your household income and where you study.
Disabled Students’ Allowance & More – Additional Grants
Children grants, adult dependants’ grants, travel grants, and more — many students don’t know they qualify. We’ll check for you.

As a mature student returning after 10 years, I didn't think I'd qualify. They found funding I didn't even know existed — including a childcare grant that made it genuinely possible for me to study.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Your Questions, Answered.
Can I get Student Finance for a Level 4 or Level 5 course?
Yes — Student Finance England funds approved Higher Education courses at Level 4 and above, including HNCs, HNDs, foundation degrees, and full bachelor's degrees. The course must be at a registered provider. We can confirm whether your specific course qualifies during your free consultation.
How much maintenance loan will I receive?
The maintenance loan amount depends on several factors: your household income, whether you live at home or away, and whether you study in London or elsewhere. For 2025/26, loans range from around £4,651 (living at home) to £13,022 (living away, in London). Lower household income generally means a higher loan.
I already have a degree — can I still apply?
This depends on your previous study and the course you want to take. In some cases, students with prior qualifications can still access funding — particularly for Level 4/5 courses or postgraduate programmes. The rules are complex, and this is one of the most common areas where students assume they're ineligible when they're not. Let us check for you.
When does Student Finance get paid?
Maintenance loans are typically paid in three instalments at the start of each term — usually in September/October, January, and April. The tuition fee loan is paid directly to your institution, so you don't receive or manage that yourself. Late applications can delay your first payment, which is why we encourage applying as early as possible.
When do I start my student loan?
You only start repaying once you earn over the repayment threshold (currently €25,000 per year for Plan 5 loans). Repayments are taken automatically at 9% of earnings above the threshold. If your income drops below the threshold at any point, repayments pause. Any remaining balance is written off after 40 years.
Do I need to repay the maintenance loan if I drop out?
Yes — any loan funds already paid must be repaid under the standard repayment terms (once you earn above the threshold). However, your tuition fee loan will be reduced proportionally based on when you left. We strongly advise speaking to us before making any decisions about withdrawing from a course.
